A Collection of Forty-Eight (48) Watercolor and Gouache Jewelry and Silverware Designs
England: 1890s. A collection of forty-eight (48) finely rendered watercolor and gouache designs, showcasing the skill of an unnamed silversmith from approx. 1920. It is evident form the designs that the creator is talented and experienced, with a keen eye for both style and the practicalities/importance of functionality in jewelry design. The designs include ideas for jewelry (bracelet, brooches, earrings, lockets and clasps), silverware, a small silver perfume bottle and trinket casket, head of a cane, what appears to be a miniature clock, embroidery scissors for a lady's sewing kit. We have identified these as English based on one of the designs, which depicts an enamel pin with large blue "V" with gold crown, presumably referencing Queen Victoria. Next to it is an enamel rose pin with shamrock and thistle (representing England, Ireland, and Scotland). Includes some more modern and geometric designs (possibly dating into the 1910s or 1920s?). Judging from the royal and equestrian themes throughout, coupled with the high-end materials and uses (e.g. the luxurious embroidery scissors), it is safe to say this jeweler or silversmith had a high-end clientele. Each rendered on card or paper scrap. Largest measures approx. 7.25" by 4.75" Very good. Toned with some nicks and short tears, light spotting.
