1913 Massachusetts Peace Society Life Membership Certificate
The Massachusetts Peace Society was founded in Boston in 1815 to "diffuse light on the subject of war, and to cultivate the principles and spirit of peace." It was created in part as a reaction to the increase in military activity during the War of 1812.
Boston, Massachusetts: Massachusetts Peace Society, 1913. Official life membership certificate issued to Thirza Jane Rowley (1845-1919) from the Massachusetts Peace Society in May, 1913. Thirza was the daughter of Homer Merriam, who was one of the three Merriam brothers (Charles, George, and Homer) of Merriam-Webster Dictionary fame. The certificate is engraved on thick card and finished in ink manuscript, and signed by officers of the society. Measures approx. 6" by 9", verso blank. Housed in original hand addressed mailing envelope (6.25" by 9.5"), postmarked and stamped. Near-fine. Envelope worn.Price: $125.00
