Friendship Album of Minnie Brutsche Otto (b.1867?) -- Acrostics, Pressed Flower, Original Pencil Drawing, Extensive Entries
Wayne County, Pennsylvania? 1882-1891. A nice friendship album recording the friends and family of a young woman (she appears to have been 15 at the time the album was given to her) from a Pennsylvania Dutch background including entries in English and German. From the first leaf: "Friends; My Album's open, Come and see, What! Won't you pen a line to me, Write but a thought, a word or two, That memory may revert to you. Minnie." The presentation inscription on the front pastedown reads, "Minnie Brutsche [?] Presented to her, by her Aunt, Lena Brutsche, Christmas 1882". Next to this pencil inscription is note from Minnie that reads, "Aunt Lena Died in 1897". A very nice friendship album owned by Minnie Brutsche with the occasional comment by her (e.g. on one entry in German, she has annotated, "From my husband"). Dates range from 1882 to 1891, and locations include New York; Wayne County, Pennsylvania; and Buffalo, New York. Surnames include Joost, Birman, Brutsche, Wetter, Kropp, Adams, and Schlesinger, among others. Content includes verse, acrostics, Victorian scraps, a pressed flower, and an original pencil drawing of flowers. Two of the entries have been annotated by Minnie as "A boy friend". Nearly every page has been filled, showing her wide and loving family and social circle. Single vol. (8.5" by 7"), approx. 50 leaves, nearly filled on every page with ink manuscript, in original brown padded cloth boards. Very good. Light toning, dust- and finer-soiling. Numerous applied transfers with some missing flecks.
