Five (5) Salesman Sample Sets of Calling Cards Visiting Cards
Ohio: Various, 1870s. An exceptional grouping of five (5) salesman's sample sets, produced by printers to showcase their calling card designs. The cards together show an important, but somewhat forgotten, piece of material history, when leaving a calling card was an important practice in polite society. Each calling card set is presented on a multi-panel packet, with model numbers, brief descriptions, and pricing. Some are examples of "paper with a secret", and reveal the owner's name when a piece of scrap is listed, or a miniature envelope opened. Companies listed include Ohio Card Company (Cadiz, Ohio); Banner Card Company (also Cadiz, possibly the same company); Buckeye Card Company (Laceyville, Ohio); and Union Card Company (Columbus, Ohio). This set includes twenty-four (24) calling cards (each measure approx. 2" by 4") and five (5) printed folding papers which each measure approx. 5.75" by 15" Very good. Some chipping and short tears, minor dust soiling. Modern tape repairs. At least one panel missing. Union Card Company set in poor shape (panels detached, chipping).
