An excellent example of how specific interpretations of American History are presented to children through ephemera and advertising early in life.
United States: [1893]. A color-illustrated ABC book for little readers, advertising family medicines and household remedies. The two main products advertised as Brandreth's Pills and Allcock's Porous Plasters. Each letter of the alphabet has a different color illustration of a significant moment in American history, highlight the Columbus expedition. Some examples: A stands for America, B stands for Boat, and C stands for Columbus. Note the interesting way in which Native Americans are depicted. Issued in tandem with the 1893 Columbian Exposition, and includes a two-page spread of the famous exhibition halls in the center of the book. Single vol. (7.25" by 5") , [1], 18, [1], illus., in original illus. self wrps with image of a baby ripping open a map on the front, sales agent information printed on lower wrapper. Good.
