A Set of Five Engravings from the Cruikshankiana Series (Cruikshank)

Toning and soiling due to age. Minor tears at edge, do not effect the engravings.

London: Thomas McLean, August 1, 1835. This set of five black and white engravings were a part of the Cruikshankiana Series, printed in London by Thomas McLean. The first set was issued circa 1825, but this collection is from a reprinting in August of 1835. The majority of the prints are by artist George Cruikshank who was an English caricaturist and book illustrator. The engravings are different sizes, printed on paper sized at 17 1/4" x 11". (The size of each engraving on the page are below) Titles in this set are as follows:

The Blue Devils!! by George Cruikshank
This print was a part of a set that were used to illustrate the discomforts and pain of illness. These 'pains' where represented by the little demons tormenting the man. Measures 10 1/4" x 8 1/4"

Dancing Dolls or Les marionettes a Londres by George Cruikshank
This engraving depicts a young boy playing fife and tabor while displaying his two puppet dolls that are stretched across a string. There are two young girls near him watching and playing with their own dolls. Measures 6" x 4 3/4"

A Good Bite or Swallowing the Bait by William Heath, 1835
Features two men standing on a river-bank unhappily fishing; one short and obese, the other tall and thin. The latter hooks a frog. Close behind them is a hound who is furtively devouring the fish which lie on the grass. Measures 6 1/4" x 4 3/4"

Study for The Dancing Lesson, Part 2: The Minuet by George Cruikshank, 1835
Depicts a young boy and girl dancing a minuet, looking at dancing master who plays a pochette. There is a little girl standing in the background on a wooden box. Measures 6 1/4" x 5"

To Calais by George Cruikshank
Illustrates passengers aboard ship who hang in misery over the railing of the ship in various stages of seasickness. There is also a woman in the background whose face obscured by a bonnet, who further shields her eyes of the wretched scene. Measures 8" x 6"
