The ABC or Alphabetical Railway Guide
London, England: Wm. Tweedie, 1862. A railway guide, but made into an ABC, published in the 1860s for tourists and locals alike to properly plan their train journeys. Published in November 1862 at the height of Victoria's reign around the same time of the International Exhibition of 1862, which brought an influx of tourists into the London. Includes a host of adverts and bound in the original yellow wrappers. Meant to be ephemeral, it would have been sold at railway stations alongside yellow back novels and other cheap publications. The alphabetical railway guide is organized by location; for example, to find the departing train times to Aberdeen from Euston Square, one would look up "Aberdeen". The contents also include a large fold-out map of railways, a list of London hotels, a steam-boat guide, and a list of "Hints to Railway Travelers" (e.g. use the cloak room for storing belongings). Single vol. (7.75" by 4.75"), pp. 107, [1], 5-28, 109-111, [1], in original printed yellow wrps. Printed on white and blue paper-- perhaps whatever the printer had on hand that particular day. Pagination is odd but does not appear to be from mis-binding, perhaps just printer error. Large open short tear with some text loss to final leaf.
