c.1874 Clip-On Earring Advertising Ephemera - Don't Pierce Your Ears!

Waukegan, Illinois: W.P. Yeoman, c.1874. Advertising ephemera issued to jewelers, promoting a patented set of solid gold clip-on earrings for the woman who wants to be both fashionable and practical. Includes two circulars and a matching illustrated advertising cover, each with an illustration of the product, and an image of two ladies. On the left, a girl is labeled "SUFFERING." with the caption, "Oh! How it does hurt! Is there so help for my trouble? The hole is nearly cut through, and they are very sore." On the right, another girl is labeled "EASE." with the caption, "Why, Vic! Have you not heard of Yeoman's new Ear Rings Fastened without piercing. I have a pair, come and look at them; they are splendid." Includes pricing ($18 per dozen pair) and a brief pitch to jewelers describing the product's marketability to women who have never pierced their ears ("some for want of courage, others think it barbarous"). Circulars measure approx. 8.5" by 5.5", and 6.75" by 5.25". Cover measures approx. 3.5" by 6.25", and is hand-addressed, stamped, and postmarked. Very good. Light toning, dust soiling, letter folds, a couple nicks. Arithmetic to verso of cover.
