Sex Advice from a Radio Star: Six (6) Sex Hygiene Booklets Penned by Marion Sayle Taylor
An excerpt showing his interest in gender roles and relations from "The Secret of Youth and Charm: Plain Sex Truths for Women": "Too little concern is shown by the average man regarding the stage of preparation and therein lies the secret of seeming frigidity in so many wives. Love to a man is a thing apart, but to a womanly woman, it is life itself."
Akron, Ohio: 1927-1928. A set of six (6) sex education booklets self-published by radio star Marion Sayle Taylor, offering a fascinating look into social and medical attitudes surrounding sex in the 1920s. Self-styled in these booklets as a doctor and "sexologist", Taylor (1889-1942) was not a medical practitioner, but rather a radio personality known for giving life advice on his radio program "The Voice of Experience". We were unable to confirm whether he had a legitimate medical degree in the modern sense of the term. Regardless, these booklets are a testament to his popularity in the 1920s and identity as a self-help guru, with listeners hanging on his every word. Interesting to think about how listeners relied on a radio star for advice on such matters, including gender relations... and how people today often do the same with YouTubers and other social media influencers (also seemingly without medical degrees). Each booklet is a single vol. (6.25" by 4"), approx. 24 pp., and stapled in its original printed colored paper wrapper. The titles include: "How to Know Your Affinity: A Study of the Glands"; "Natural Birth Control and Pre-determination of Sex"; "The Secret of Youth and Charm: Plain Sex Truths for Women"; "Sex Knowledge for Children: A Parent's Duty to the Child"; "Sex Vigor: How Retained, How Regained"; and "Social Diseases: A National Menace" Good to very good. Light dust soiling, occasional staining, including rust staining from staples. Minor nicks and abrasions. Rubbed.Price: $750.00
