Two (2) Civil War Brooklyn Sanitary Fair Broadsides
New York, New York: A. Brown & Co, c.1864. A set of two (2) Brooklyn Sanitary Fair chromolithorgaphs, each measuring approx. 18" by 16" and printed by A. Brown & Co. of New York. Both were originally issued "for Henry McClosky's Manual of 1864" (actual title, "Manual of the common council of the city of Brooklyn"). The 1864 Brooklyn Sanitary Fair was a particularly successful sanitary fair whose aim was to raise money for food, medical supplies, and clothing for the Union Army. Organized by Brooklyn women volunteers, it garnered over $400,000 for relief funds. Two temporary structures were erected by the Brooklyn Academy of Music to house exhibits ranging from fine and decorative art to a replica "colonial kitchen" where colonial era American food was served by the Brooklyn women volunteers in colonial outfits. The first print of the two depicts this scene, and the second depicts a grand "View of the Academy of Music as Seen From the Stage" complete with patriotic decorations. Fair. Short tears, dust soiling. Modern paper repairs. Sometime laid down on paper.
