Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle Calendar Card

The Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle was founded in the late 1870s and is still in operation today. Each year it chooses "at least nine books of literary quality and invites the authors to Chautauqua present their work to an audience of approximately 1,000 readers" (chq.org).

Chautauqua, New York: 1888. A promotional monthly calendar card issued by the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle to advertise its organization to prospective members. Includes a monthly calendar beginning in October 1888, each with a different truism and author (e.g. December is "Plato" with the phrase "God is truth and light his shadow"). The calendar is surrounded by a classical architecture design. On the verso is a list of required readings for the year, including classical history, religious studies, and zoology, with an ink stamp with an added reading ("Appletons Chemistry, Feb. March & April"). Measures approx. 4" by 6" Very good. Toned.
