"Justice for the Deaf-Mute" - Needle and Thread Set Sold by Deaf Salespeople in 1954
Chicago, Illinois: National Deaf Mute Sales Co, 1954. A scarce promotional folder with needle and thread sold by members of the Deaf community to support themselves. The front reads: "I AM A DEAF MUTE. My Way of Earning an Honest Living is the Selling of These Useful Articles. World's Greatest Deaf-Mute Door to Door Sales Value. 50 cents". On the back is a longer explanation of the social problem at play, highlighting the need for members of the community to earn a living and that it is good policy to "hire handicapped". Inside the folder are needles and a threader secured to decorative papers. Attached by a metal chain is a "lucky" volvelle with a 100-year calendar. On the verso is a visual representation of the alphabet in sign language. Folder measures approx. 3.75" by 5" Lacks a couple needles and one small decorative paper scrap from inside.
