Hartford, Connecticut: Hudson and Co. Printers, 1817. Scarce second American edition of a children's book first published in London in 1814, penned by Mary Martha Sherwood (1775-1851). Containing strong themes of colonialism and evangelicalism, it tells the story of a young British boy who converts an Indian man. Sherwood's name is not included on the title page; instead, the following statement is included on the verso of the title-page: "This little book, now republished, was sent by Mrs. Bardwell to her mother, and contains an interesting history of facts, which occurred in the Eastern World, and furnishes ample proof of the usefulness of female missionaries." 1 copy only of this edition in WorldCat (June 2026). Single vol. (7" by 4"), pp. 32, in original printed blue-grey wrps. Good to very good. Gatherings/leaves beginning to loosen from sewing and wrps. Toning, a couple minor nicks or short tears, corners bumped.
