Early 1860s Roller Skate Two-sided coated stock illustrated Trade Card

One of the first patented roller skates in the United States.

New York, New York: O.M. Vail, 1860s. Advertising card for "Shaler's Flexible Roller Patent Floor Skates", marketed as being able to "run on a naked floor, or on any carpet or oil cloth, without injuring them in the least, and perfectly imitat[ing] ice skating!". Pitches them as good exercise for women and safe for children. Line drawings of the products on both sides with pricing and sizing on the back. Measures approx. 3.25" by 5.5" Good to very good. Dust soiling, some oxidation on coated stock side of card. Holes from previous staple.
