The Little Journal for Physicians, Vol. 2, No. 8 -- Interesting Commentary on Gender Roles in the Medical Field c.1934
The S.M.A. Corporation was a pioneering manufacturer of infant formula.
Cleveland, Ohio: S.M.A. Corporation, 1934. The December, 1934 issue of "The Little Journal for Physicians", featuring "Wit and Wisdom in Pleasant Doses". Includes a few truisms/sayings (e.g. "Be grateful for luck but don't count on it"), brief interesting articles, and adverts for "Breast Milk Adaptation" (i.e. machine-made baby formula, a new-ish innovation highly regarded in the medical community) and dietary supplements. Of most interest to modern readers, however, is an interesting view of gender roles in the field at the time on page 11: "Just about the time a girl finishes a [medical] course designed to train her for some professional career she gets married, and in most instances the money that the taxpayers, parents, or philanthropists put up for her education is apparently wasted. The hospitals, graduate schools, and professional schools are beginning to worry about this ... If they are to hop gaily from graduation into matrimony, what's the use?" (pp. 11-12). Single vol. (7" by 4.5"), pp. 12, in original printed red and white wrps. Very good to near-fine. Minor toning, dust soiling.Price: $225.00
