1905 Sewing Sample Book by 14-year-old Student of Sewing
United States: 1905. A sewing sample book created by a fourteen-year-old girl in class between 1905 and 1906, including just over twenty-five (25) sewing samples exhibiting her new skills. Each sample is pasted into the composition notebook and accompanied by a handwritten explanation penned by the young lady. Techniques learned include: French Hem; Running Stitch; Basting; Placket; Back Stitch; Darning; Hemming a patch on; Damask patch; Flannel patch; Gathering; Scalloped Edge; Honeycombing; Buttonholes; and Embroidery. A gift inscription reads in the front of the book, "To Val, 1971 In remembrance of when I was fourteen at The Old Academy". Single vol. (8.5" by 7"), approx. fifty leaves, about half filled with samples and manuscript, in original covers (?) recently (c1971) covered in modern patterned paper. Fair. Toned with extensive staining from previous water damage, light dust soiling, short tears/nicks.
