Juvenile Delinquency in 20th Century America - predominantly 1940s through 1960s

United States: 1928 to 1968. A superlative research collection exploring the topic of juvenile delinquency in twentieth century America, comprised of eighty (80) items. Published by agencies, researchers, and community initiatives, the items provide a kaleidoscope of viewpoints through which to see the issue of juvenile delinquency. Themes include: a growing awareness of the specific problem of young girls as delinquents, and gendered notions of delinquency; delinquency in wartime; the different roles of schools, communities, and the courts in addressing delinquency; and a growing emphasis on prevention over punitive measures. Another interesting theme throughout the collection is that many of the researchers, authors, and contributors to these publications were women or woman-led teams. The collection is divided into four (4) different categories, each highlighting a different facet of the subject: state and federal government agency initiatives; community initiatives; the role of juvenile courts; and the role of schools. Topics range from prevention (how to prevent a child from becoming a delinquent) to amelioration (how to reform and support children who have already become delinquents). The items range in date from 1928 to 1968, with the bulk being published in the 1950s and 1960s, providing a bird's-eye view of how the nation's approach to the problem evolved over the middle of the century. The four (4) categories are detailed below with listings of each item.
