1850s Pennsylvania Dutch ABC -- "High German Lutheran ABC and Name Booklet for children who are beginning to learn"
Philadelphia: bei Sch0 fer und Koradi, 1850s. A later edition of a charming Pennsylvania Dutch ABC, published for early learners just beginning to read ("fu r Kinder welche anfangen zu lernen"). The first and final leaves have been pasted into the binding as endpapers, and feature woodcuts of animals for each letter (e.g. "igel" or hedgehog for "i"), and a chart in Roman type (the rest of the volume is in Fraktur). Begins with letters before moving on to phonics, words, and short phrases. Single vol. (7.25" by 4.5"), pp. 36, in contemporary (original?) paper covered boards with woodcut of Martin Luther on front, backed in later cloth, early pencil inscription on upper pastedown with charming naive pencil drawing of a rat scurrying down the left-hand margin. Good. Toning, spotting, dust soiling, hinges cracked, wear to binding.
