Fortune Teller Volvelle

Columbus, Ohio: Columbus Buggy Co., 1888. A clever 1880s fortune teller volvelle advertising the Columbus Buggy Company. The volvelle is made from a card volvelle wheel measuring approx. 4" in diameter, affixed to a 5" by 4" card with small metal grommet. The wheel has a small window that reveals each letter of the alphabet and a corresponding fortune. The directions read, "Turn to each letter of your full name and write the prediction for each letter, keeping the good predictions separate from those that predict ill ... When all the letters of your name have been used, ascertain the number of [good fortunes versus bad fortunes]. Whichever is in excess will be Your Fortune". Includes an image of a fortune teller giving a young couple their fortune. On the back is a brief pitch for the company's engraved name plates for buggies. Very good. Toned with spotting, a couple nicks. Light bend upper right.
