The American Observer Vol. XI, Nos. 33-36 -- WWII News and Civic Education, May 1942

Washington, D.C. Civic Education Service, 1942. Four issues of the American Observer published in May 1942, offering invaluable insight into efforts by civic education organizations to educate the general American public about goings on in the war. This particular paper was published weekly by the Civic Education Service, with these four issues spanning the following subjects: the need to mobilize manpower for wartime industries; news from all fronts; rationing; relief in China; Japan's industries; youth in war work; women in war work; poison gas warfare; strengthening Alaskan defenses; Africa's role in the war; consumer victory club activities; the tense relationship between Hitler and Mussolini; rising prices at home and abroad; and more. Includes the occasional black and white political cartoon or small section of one-liner jokes to lighten the mood. Interesting to read the patriotic and positive tone of the paper. No. 33 includes an interesting picture quiz of "Newsmakers", which quizzes readers on who important figures are (e.g. Roosevelt, McNutt, Churchill, etc.). Each issue measures approx. 16.25" by 11.5", and is approx. 8 pp. with in-text line drawings and photographs. Very good. Light toning, some pencil markings.
