"Hold-to-Light" Advertising Card for Johnson, Clark & Co. Sewing Machines

Chicago, Illinois: Johnson, Clark & Co, 1880s. A clever "Hold-to-Light" style advertising card promoting sewing. machines sold by Johnson, Clark & Co. in the 1880s. On the front is a downcast woman sewing by hand in candlelight. When the viewer holds the card to light, the illegible message magically becomes legible, and is revealed to say, "The Light Running New Home Sewing Machine". Her illustration is also changed to reveal her smiling with the machine in front of her, cutting her labor in half. measures approx. 5" by 3". Ink inscription of Minnesota-based sales agent to verso ("O.J. Kraure"). Good. Toned with minor dust soiling, lower right-hand corner chipped.
