Peepshow Depicting the Fire of Moscow of 1815

The Fire of Moscow during the French occupation is regarded as a poignant visual turning point in the Napoleonic Wars. It led inexorably to the restructuring of Europe. A concertina version of this Peepshow is described in Ralph Hyde’s Paper Peepshows [item 110].

Germany: c1835. A five (5) chamber peepshow. The cover hand colored lithograph depicts Napoleon and his troops camped outside of Moscow in 1812 and is captioned MOSKAU. The first chamber scene is a forest like scene, a reminder of home in France. The next three scenes are views of the encampment. The back panel depicts Moscow ablaze with Napoleon and his soldiers looking on. Measures 3.25" by 4.75". 12" long when fully extended. Contained in a later marbled slipcase and housed in a modern custom-made buckram box, spine lettered in gilt. Light wear.
