1906 Friendship Album -- Spirited Original Artwork, Musical Quotes, Signatures
Norwich, England: Jarrold & Sons, Ltd, 1906. An early 1900s friendship album, kept by "Doris L'Estrange" from England. Approx. one-quarter filled with original drawings, watercolors, signatures of friends and family, and even a couple pages of musical quotes (J.S. Bach and W.A. Mozart). Dates of the entries range from 1906 to 1917. What makes this friendship album notable is its charming character; it paints a picture of a spirited woman (girl?) with a convivial network of friends and family who love a good caricature. Some of the charming illustrations include Kewpie-type characters, Gibson girl style drawings, a watercolor dog with a large bow, and three little prim maids going to tea. Single vol. (6.25" by 4), approx. 50 unnumbered blank leaves approx. one-quarter filled with original artwork and manuscript, in original red-orange cloth stamped in white on upper board ("Album"). Early ink ownership inscription to front free endpaper verso ("Doris L'Estrange. May 15th 1906"). Department store ticket to upper pastedown ("Jarrold & Sons, Ltd."). Good to very good. At least two leaves sometime excised. Light dust soiling, wear, a couple stains to binding.
