c.1910 Real Photo Postcard Depicting Female Students at a Nez Perce Reservation School
Lapwai, Idaho: c.1910. A c.1910 real photo postcard showing over forty female students from the Nez Perce Reservation School, one of many such government-funded and missionary-led "Indian Boarding Schools" created in the late 19th- and early 20th century. The girls are all in uniform, and range in age from very small to teenaged. Some smile, some grimace, and one in the front appears to be telling her little friend a secret. Three women in white uniforms, presumably the school mistresses, stand in the back row. The exact school is not specified; could perhaps be part of the government boarding school converted from Fort Lapwai in 1885 that closed in 1910 to become a tuberculosis sanatorium. Postcard unused, measures approx. 3.5" by 5.5" Very good. Light toning, dust soiling. Remnants of black scrapbook paper to verso. Light soiling to foot of front.
