The Fortune Teller
Springfield, Massachusetts: Milton Bradley Co, 1905. From Milton Bradley, a "Novel and Exciting Game" for two or more players allowing them to tell each other's "fortunes". This set is near-complete with the lower box lid (approx. 9.25" by 7.25" by 1"), printed directions sheet (bifolium 7" by 8.5"), and die-cut spinner card (approx. 8" by 7") with illustration of fortune teller woman (stylized "Gypsy" stereotype). It lacks the original upper box lid. To play, one person is designated the "Fortune Teller" and places the spinner in the middle of the table. They adjust the metal wand in the center to a random length, and then turn the wheel three times. The Fortune Teller then reads aloud the Fortune to the recipient (substituting pronouns where needed). The recipient can also ask an additional question/"wish", and the Fortune Teller can turn the wheel once to answer that wish. The answer sheet provides fortunes to every card in a standard deck of playing cards. Some example fortunes:
Queen of Hearts: "Beware of red hair, it will bring you bad luck. A very fair individual, fond of gaiety, and a flirt, is your rival."
Two of Spades: "You are in love with a handsome and intelligent foreigner, but there is opposition in his family."
Four of Diamonds: "It was a great pity you proposed to him, otherwise he might have asked you to be his wife; but he was right to refuse you; he has a wholesome horror of the grey mare." Good to very good. Upper lid lacking. Some light dust soiling, toning, spotting. Lower lid damaged.
