"Constancy" - Elaborate Octavo Valentine
England: Mullard, 1860s. An elaborate and remarkably well-preserved octavo-sized Valentine, featuring gilt embellished lace paper, embossed Victorian scrap. This example is also notable for the extensive poem inside written in contemporary ink manuscript, beginning, "Where is another sweet as my sweet, Fair of the fair, and shy of the shy? Fine little hands-- fine little feet-- Dewy blue eye..." The imagery on the Valentine is largely pastoral inspired, with flora, children in country garb, and embossed Victorian scrap mottos ("Constancy", "Trust me", "Be mine"). Measures approx. 7" by 7.75". Blind stamp to lower leaf ("From the collection of Marcia Finley Smith") Beleived to be Mullard lace paper. Very good to near-fine. A couple minor spots, nicks.
