Devotional Card - Intricate Embossed Lace Paper Scrap with Engraving Depicting the Nativity

Maison Basset was a French publishing house known for producing fine maps, atlases, and prints. They were most active between 1819 and 1860.

France: Maison Basset, 1850s. An exceptional embossed lace paper devotional card, intricately designed and depicting the Nativity. In the center, there is an engraving of Mary and Joseph holding the baby Jesus, with an angel kneeling in prayer. Embossed at the top reads the text, "Gloire a Dieu au plus Haut des Cieux" ("Glory to God in the highest"). On the reverse side reads, loosely translated, "Glory to God in the highest and peace to man on earth to men of good will. Let us meditate on these words sung by the angels on the day of the Nativity and let us glorify the Lord by abandoning ourselves to his divine providence". Oval-shaped, measuring approx. 4" by 2.75" Very good to near-fine.
