"When this you see remember me" -- Manuscript Meditation on Death, Remembrance
United States: 1840s? A small scrap of paper, carefully penned in ink manuscript with a meditation on death and remembrance. Rendered more charming by the author's need to squeeze the last few letters of "remember me" above the first line. It reads in full: "When this you see remember me Lord prepare us by thy grace soon we must resign our breath and our souls be called to pass through the iron gate of death let us now our days improve listen to Gospel voice seek the things that are above scorn the world's pretended joys". It is signed by Amos B. Dunbar (1808-1881). He was born in Palmer, Hampden County, Massachusetts and died in Newark, New Jersey at the age of 73. Measures approx. 5" by 8", verso blank. Very good. Toned, letter folds. Small short tear, one small pinhole at center of letter folds.
