"The Challenge of Birth Control" -- Three (3) Academic Case Studies Highlighting New Push for Democratization of Birth Control in Late 1930s America

"The Birth Control Clinical Research Bureau (BCCRB) began in 1923 as the Clinical Research Bureau (CRB), the first legal birth control clinic in the country. Opened in New York City by Margaret Sanger, the CRB operated under the auspices of the American Birth Control League (ABCL) and functioned primarily as a contraceptive dispensary and research laboratory. It quickly emerged as the nation's primary facility for the testing and study of contraceptive methods and devices. In June of 1928, when Sanger resigned as president of the ABCL, she assumed full control of the CRB (renaming it the BCCRB) and severed all legal ties with the ABCL. The BCCRB served as an autonomous clinic and research facility from 1928 to 1939" (Margaret Sanger Papers Project website: https://sanger.hosting.nyu.edu/aboutms/organization_bccrb/).

[New York, New York]: [Birth Control Clinical Research Bureau], 1938. A series of three (3) pamphlets published by Margaret Sanger's Birth Control Clinical Research Bureau for medical professionals and scholars studying birth control and women's health in the United States in the late 1930s. The first pamphlet begins by highlighting a new social and cultural push for increased access to contraception and family planning education: "In the last ten years the birth control movement has taken on a new significance in the United States. The intellectual awakening an emancipation of women in the Western World, the advent of the greatest industrial depression in American history, and a spreading revolt among our labor masses against their low plane of living have combined to make more insistent the demand for the democratization of contraceptive knowledge" (p.3). An important window into women's struggle for the right to choose in the United States.
