1930s Birth Control Advertising -- Seven (7) Booklets Marketing Lanteen Brand Contraception to Women between 1934 and 1942
"Modern birth control has built for women a new world of love, peace and security; it offers to them a happy home, combined with a successful career"
Chicago, Illinois: Lanteen Laboratories, Inc., 1934-1942. Seven (7) printed booklets advertising birth control products by Lanteen. Educates women about different birth control methods by describing which methods are safe and reliable and how they work. Unsurprisingly, it argues that the spermicidal jelly and cap diaphragm method by Lanteen is the superior choice. These booklets were published long before "the pill" arrived in the 1960s; provides interesting insight into what options were available to women in the 1930s, and how birth control was discreetly marketed to them by pharmaceutical companies. Appeals to modern 1930s American women with the unsaid sentiment, "sex is here to stay, so women must take matters into their own hands and control their reproductive freedoms themselves with these products". Note the use of Dr. Norman Carr, M.D., to legitimize the products as modern, scientific, and safe. The booklets include, in chronological order:"Marriage Hygiene as Prescribed by Physicians".
