Engraved Invitation to 1834 Series of Midwifery Lectures

Westel Willoughby, Jr. (November 20, 1769 - October 3, 1844) was a U.S. Representative from New York.

Born in Goshen, Connecticut, Willoughby moved to Newport, New York. He studied medicine and engaged in practice. He was appointed judge of the court of common pleas of Herkimer County in 1805 and served until 1821. He served as president of the Herkimer County Medical Society 1806-1816 and 1818-1836. He served in the State assembly in 1808 and 1809.

He served as president of the College of Physicians and Surgeons for the Western District of New York 1812-1844.

[Fairfield, New York]: 1834. Engraved invitation card (2.75" by 4"), finished in contemporary ink, inviting medical student Abram Arndt to a series of midwifery lectures given by W. Willoughby, M.D. at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of the Western District of New York. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of the Western District of New York was chartered in 1812, and was based in Fairfield, New York. It was renamed Fairfield Medical College and offered physicians education in "anatomy, pharmacy, medicine, surgery, and obstetrics" (Wikipedia). Very good. Minor toning, dust soiling.
