Accomplished Hair Work Sent to Friend "Rather die than change"
Pittsfield, Massachusetts: [1840]. A particularly fine piece of hair work by "M.D.C." in two larger loops, each comprised of dozens of tiny individual loops/braiding. It is secured with wax onto a scrap of paper, and housed in the original envelope postmarked and addressed to Miss Elizabeth Kirtland of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. The envelope was sealed with a small lithographed seal with the printed message "Rather die than change". Notable for the fineness of the braiding; clearly "M.D.C." was accomplished. Envelope measures 2.5" by 4" Very good to near-fine. Some toning, short tears, one or two small stains to envelope and paper. Wax beginning to crack.
