Indian Wine Bitters and Rheumatic Drops

Attleboro, Massachusetts: James M. Solomon, Jr., 1890s. Illustrated advertising card for "Old Doctor Jas. M. Solomon's Indian Wine Bitters", which claims here to be "The Greatest Blood Purifier and Liver and Kidney Cure in the World". Promoted by James M. Solomon, Jr., "The seventh son of Old Dr. James M. Solomon, the great Indian doctor". Solomon claimed Native American heritage throughout his career. Despite his claim, we can find no hard evidence that the doctor had any legitimate connection to or ancestry from Native American peoples. He did appear with "a troupe of Penobscot Indians" for a night of "music, songs, marriage ceremonies, etc." in 1885 (Fitchburg Sentinel, Monday, January 26, 1885), and opened an Attleboro sanatorium under his name in the 1890s. Illustrated card measuring 4" by 6.25" with green, red, and purple chromolithography. Toned with foxing, extremities worn/chipped. Minor dust soiling.
