Official Programme [for] Celebration of Empire Day

San Francisco, California: British American League, 1918. "Be Proud of Your Island Ancestry and the Blood the Flows in Your Veins", urges the lower wrapper of this programme for Empire Day, held by the British American League and British American War Relief Fund. Held towards the end of WWI in San Francisco, the event proudly lauds Britain's role in the conflict and in Western History. The day included music, speeches and addresses, pageants and tableaus, and dancing. There was even a Kaiser impersonator: "Don't mob him! Bear in mind he is only a make-believe Kaiser, and is one of us and part of the show" (p. [12]). Advertises recruitment agencies for young men interested in joining the war effort, and includes a directory of British Societies for Anglophiles. Lower wrapper illustrated with map of English speaking countries and Britain's colonies. Statistics are included for: "Areas controlled by the Anglo-British races" (16,882,050 sq. miles); "Populations under Anglo-British-American Dominion" (525,500,000); and English language speakers (170,000,000). 8vo (8.5" by 6"), pp. [16], with in-text advertisements and illustrations, stapled in original wrappers illustrated with the Union Jack, map on lower wrapper. Very good, minor shelf wear, light toning, dust soiling. Lower edge shaved. Vertical crease.
