Pocket Record Book of Jeremiah Varney -- Greenville, Maine Town Surveyor

Varney was a respected community Deacon and surveyor, but had an unusual report written about him in 1874: "Deacon Jeremiah Varney of Greenville has become insane. On Monday he fled to the woods, imagining himself pursued by a man with a gun. About fifty of the inhabitants joined in the successful search for him" (Boston Evening Transcript, 18 July 1874).

[Greenville, Maine]: 1854. A handmade pocket record book owned by Jeremiah Varney (d.1893), a surveyor for the town of Greenville, Maine. Includes 3 pp. of handwritten instructions signed in ink by the town assessors, Stephen Darling and Edmund Scammus[?]. Includes a record of poll, personal estate, and real estate taxes owed, as well as acreage owned and land value of fourteen (14) landowners in Greenville, including Varney himself. 12mo (6.75" by 4.5"), 12 pages of lined notebook paper, unnumbered, approx. half-filled with ink manuscript, sewn in original scrap paper wrappers. "Jeremiah Varney 1854 No. 4" written in early ink on upper wrapper. Good. Wrappers worn with dust soiling, short tears. A couple minor stains/spots.
