Pro-temperance Political Flyer

Canton, Ohio: John Danner, c.1884. A small pro-Temperance political flyer (6" by 3") published during a turbulent period in Ohio when "Boodle and Beer" were seen as beginning to "triumph" in the political sphere. The flyer asserts that "A vote for a tax and license party is a vote to perpetuate 'Boodle and Beer'" and asks, "Can you, as a loyal American citizen, cast your ballot for any such party?" The verso depicts "Deacon Dodger", a satirical character that prays for temperance but votes for the saloons; underneath is a scathing rhyme decrying his hypocrisy at the polls. Very good to fine; some marginal dust soiling, short tears, not affecting text or image.
