1860s-1880s Fire Fighter Ephemera -- Calling Cards, Invitations, Programs, Ribbons, Dance Cards
United States: 1860s-1880s. A small gathering of ephemera related to firemen and fire stations in the 1860s through the 1880s, mainly located in New England towns such as Nashua, New Hampshire, and Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Together, the materials provide a window into the social lives of these first responders, including charity balls and benefits supporting their hose companies. There is also an official document noting the election of a former fire fighter as a representative of his Massachusetts district, and several ceremonial ribbons. Two or more items appear to be unrelated to fire fighting, but were owned by a fire fighter (John Allen Root, the aforementioned Massachusetts representative). There are thirty-nine (39) items in total, including: two programs; two dance cards; one postal card; one blank membership card; eleven tickets and invitations; nine ribbons; one election document; ten business/calling cards (including two duplicates); and two photograph CDV's. The largest item measures approx. 14" by 8.5. Very good. Minor flaws including light toning, dust soiling, the occasional nick, short tear, or spot.
