At least two lawsuits were put forth to the company for misrepresenting its product, including one in 1898 from Dr. A. Gude & Co., chemists from Leipzig.

Advertising booklet for an iron- and manganese-based patent medicine, Gude's Pepto-Mangan, beginning with sweeping statements about the history of medicine: "Ever since the art of medicine emerged from its chrysalis stage of mysticism, mummery and moonshine, iron in some form has been administered ... The preparation of iron and manganese, briefly described in the following pages, is based upon modern fact, not upon old-time speculation" (p. [1]). The pages following describe the product's palatability, therapeutic uses, and recommended dosages and administration. The therapeutic advantages of the product include Hematinic Potency, Distinct Palatability, Prompt Acceptability and Absorbability and Lack of Astringency. For use in anemia, Chlorosis, Chlor-Anemia, Brights Disease, Malaria, Sepsis and much more.[8] pp., stapled in original green illustrated wrappers. Fine.
