1876 Program Promoting "The Gigantic Duprez & Benedict's Minstrels"
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Merrihew & Son, c.1876. Printed program outlining a full night of musical entertainments starring "The Gigantic Duprez & Benedict's Minstrels", a traveling minstrel group popular with the public in the 1870s. As might be expected, one of the biggest numbers includes black face/minstrelsy (one of the numbers is described as "the Mirth-Provoking Black Sketch, entitled The Noble Savage"). Other entertainments include comic songs and dances, a burlesque titled "Gambrinus", and "Dumony's New Farce, entitled The Midnight Intruder". The final act is described as an "Exciting Illuminated Comic Tableau" with the whole company of players. Printed bifolium (5" by 3.5"). Advertises the company's printed songster for sale on the back. Good. Light toning, dust soiling, a couple nicks, stains/spotting.
