Hollis, Maine: 1831-1864. A manuscript account book kept by Hiram Johnson (1805-1891), a cabinet maker and carpenter from Hollis, Maine. Nearly every page has been filled, and provides insight into his business and movements between 1831 and 1864. An example of a typical entry: "April 1848 one trundle bedstead 1.25". It also records what he was paid for his labor: "Oct 1847 one day work 1.00". An invaluable look into the economics of being a carpenter in New England between 1831 and 1864. Single vol. (7.75" by 6.25"), approx. 40 leaves nearly filled with manuscript, several leaves excised for use as receipts, bound in original decorated paper-covered boards backed in brown leather. Good. Toned with spotting, staining, dust soiling, extremities of binding worn. Some cut-out snippets and a few pages throughout.
