Description

The blank invitation asks for the guest attendance on Monday March 10th 1870 from nine to twelve. The party was being held at Gramercy Park, the location of his home. The invitation is to celebrate the 25 years since he, and a group of his friends, as well as other investors, learned that they had a chance at working on Newfoundland telegraph system. They were successful and started to lay the groundwork for the creation of transatlantic telegraph communication. The invitation references this with small printed tableaus representing four continents with the name underneath.  America, Europe, Asia, and Africa each have a corner with cables connecting them together. There is also a illustration of a group of men in discussion around a globe and map, which is probably representative of Field and his group making the plans for the original Newfoundland telegraph lines. The invitation is mounted on a paper backing. Invitation measures 7 1/2" x 5 1/2". Paper measures 11" x 7 1/4".
