Description

In 1893, Michael H. de Young, the publisher of the San Francisco Chronicle, after going to the World's Colombian Exposition in Chicago had an idea- maybe he could bring a similar fair to San Francisco? As San Francisco, like most of the nation, was suffering from a depression at the time, his plan was met with skepticism. Eventually he won over the local businessmen and soon the rest of the city. In order to raise money for what would become known as California's Midwinter International Exposition, he sought private donors from all over the city. The Golden Gate Operatic Society agreed that the proceeds from the sale of tickets to Gilbert & Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance would go towards the fair. The ticket is printed on bright yellow card stock with a red stamp in the center declaring California's Midwinter International Exposition, Jan. 1894. On top of the stamp, printed in black, is the information about the event, (location, cost, time, etc.). Measures 4 1/2" x 2 1/2".
