Description

A manuscript copy of a contract for the Northern Plank Road located in Oneida County in New York. Presumably prepared for subscribers. The plank road was designed to go from "northern termination of Deerfield Corner of the Deerfield McAdam Road to the northern termination of the present turnpike near High Tavern in the Town of Remsen." There are a list of 49 subscriber names and the agreed upon sum each individual offered to fund the construction of the road.  Amounts ranging $2000 to $38.  Signers include Horatio Seymour (a future governor) and Henry R. Hart. The contract is written on single fold blue paper. 12 1/2" x 7 3/4" (folded), 15 1/2" x 7 3/4" (unfolded). Between  1844 and the mid 1850s there was a 'plank road boom' and over 10,000 miles of road, mainly in the Northeast, where constructed by the end.
