Description

Baroness Eveline Von Maydell (1890-1962) was a well known silhouette artist who exhibited and sold her work internationally, mainly due to the fact that she relocated across the globe to several locations during her life. This short booklet is most likely an undated exhibition catalogue to an unknown art gallery or museum in the US. The catalogue features twelve (12) of Maydell's most popular silhouettes, such as 'Portrait of Mrs. W. K. DuPont', 'Portrait Group of Countess L. Szechenyi with her Children" and "Portrait of Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt Jr." Accompanying the silhouettes is a short history of the art of silhouettes and how the Baroness learned the art written by Helen Lee Peabody. Maydell lived in the United States from 1922 to the late 1950s, not including several years spent in Europe in the late 1940s before returning to the US at the advent of WWII. The catalogue was most likely produced during that time period. Additionally there is a poem composed by J. G. Allen, called "Tribute to Baroness Maydell" that was published in 1929 and is printed on the last page of the catalogue. Furthermore, a few of the silhouettes within the catalogue are dated within the caption to the 1930s.12 unnunmbered pgs., including illustrated wrapper. Staple binding. Measures 8" x 6".
