Description

A book devoted to the history of Saco Bay, Maine, that is meant to inform the travel about the best sites to see. Written by John Staples Locke, it starts off with a preface that romances travel.  "Some travellers (sp.) see and enjoy more than others. The most informed enjoy most. The greater the knowledge of a locality the greater the pleasure of travel. What to one is a barren, useless tract, with nothing of interest, is to another a thrilling reminder of early warfare, heroic struggles, and daring deeds." Saco Bay itself is a small curved embayment in the Gulf of Maine. Located to the south is Biddeford Pool which is a large tidal pool near the town of Biddeford, Maine's first recorded settlement (then known as Winter Harbor). Old Orchard Beach, Pine Point, and Prout's Neck are other destinations one can visit nearby.  The book has been divided up into 9 chapters: Early Settlements, Government and Laws, Indian Wars, Old Orchard Beach, Biddeford Pool and Surroundings, Historical Houses, Ferry Beach or Bay View, Pine Point and Prout's Neck, and How to Reach the Shores of Saco Bay. At the end of the book there is a hotel directory. Additionally, taped bound into the book is a large fold out map of Saco Bay (Measures 32 1/2" x 12" unfolded). There are numerous black and white illustrations of people and places of note throughout the book as well. There is a previous owner's bookplate on the front interior cover. Board covers with applied marble. 105 pages. Measures 7 3/4" x 5".
