Ten (10) Vibrant & Whimsical Prints Promoting Printing Inks - Ault & Wiborg Company, J. Manz, Jaenecke Printing Ink Co., and Queen City Printing Ink Co.

United States: 1901. Ten (10) vibrant two-sided chromolithograph prints advertising printing inks, dry colors, varnishes, bronze powders, and paper, with one advertising a company offering engraving, electrotyping, and photography. Four (4) different companies are represented in this grouping including the Ault & Wiborg Company, J. Manz, Jaenecke Printing Ink Co., and Queen City Printing Ink Co. Each of the prints feature striking color and Art Nouveau design. The Jaenecke prints feature stereotypical/racist imagery, particularly in the depiction of a bright yellow Asian "imp". The prints include:

"The Jaenecke Printing Ink Co." Newark: Jaenecke Printing Ink Co., c.1901. Measures 11.5" by 8.25". Large illustration of a smiling moon. Five color process inks are noted at the base. Notes that it was "Awarded Prize Medal Paris Exposition 1900". Verso blank.

"Satin and the Imps." Newark: Jaenecke Printing Ink Co., 1901. Jaenecke Imps Series No. 3. Measures 11.5" by 8.25". Printed on "Miehle" Two-Revolution Press on Polychrome paper made by Louis De Jonge & Co. Front side depicts vivid imagery of Satin and a group of imps maliciously squirting ink from a tube. Note the Asian appearing imp has stereotypical characteristics. The three color process inks are noted at the base. The reverse is printed in Lincoln Green with Art Nouveau border decoration and promotional narrative at center.

"Imp of Orange Hue." Newark: Jaenecke Printing Ink Co., 1901. Jaenecke Imps Series No. 4. Measures 11.5" by 8.25". Printed on "Miehle" Two-Revolution Press on Polychrome paper made by Louis De Jonge & Co. Front side depicts five imps with stereotypical imagery. The four color process inks are noted at the base. The reverse is printed in "Sienna Brown, No. 6486" with Art Nouveau border decoration and promotional narrative at center.

"Purple: A Royal Imp." Newark: Jaenecke Printing Ink Co., 1901. Jaenecke Imps Series No. 5. Measures 11.5" by 8.25". Printed on "Miehle" Two-Revolution Press on Polychrome paper made by Louis De Jonge & Co. Front side depicts vivid imagery of a royal purple imp with other vibrantly colored imps at his side. Stereotypical depictions. The five color process inks are noted at the base. The reverse is printed in light purple "Satin Ink, No. 2" with Art Nouveau border decoration and promotional narrative at center.

"Brightly Colored Imps." Newark: Jaenecke Printing Ink Co., 1901. Jaenecke Imps Series No. 10. Measures 11.5" by 8.25". Printed on Trichromatic paper made by Dill & Collins. Front side depicts brightly colored imps flanking printing ink cans. Stereotypical depictions. The six color process inks are noted at the base. The reverse is printed in dark blue "Duo Half-Tone Ink, No. 5" with Art Nouveau border decoration and and photos of factories at center.

"The Jaenecke Printing Ink Co." Newark: Jaenecke Printing Ink Co., c.1901. Jaenecke Imps Series, lacking a series number. Measures 11.5" by 8.25". Printed on Trichromatic paper made by Dill & Collins. Front side depicts brightly colored imps bursting through a leaf of paper. Stereotypical depictions. The six color process inks are noted at the base. The reverse is printed in "Philippine Black, No. 9836" with Art Nouveau border decoration and photos of factories at center.

[Untitled]. Cincinnati: The Ault & Wiborg Company, c.1901. Measures 11.5" by 8.25". Six color process inks are noted at base. Verso features an illustration of a businessman printed in "English Black, 577-61" alongside a humorous poem, "That Last Three Pounds is Brains".

[Untitled]. Chicago: The Queen City Printing Ink Co., c.1901. Measures 11.5" by 8.25". Depicts 18th-century printers on both sides; advertises Niagara Paper Mills on verso. Printed in gray, black, orange, and brown on dark gray card stock.

[Untitled]. Chicago: The Queen City Printing Ink Co., c.1901. Measures 11.5" by 8.25". Four color process inks are noted at base. Depicts Japanese man in traditional dress. Reverse reproduces a work of art in "Royal Blue No. 720" ink.

[Untitled]. Chicago: J. Manz Engraving Co., c.1901. Measures 11.75" by 8.25". Front depicts classical man in bright orange and blue patterned draped fabric, reverse depicts a classical woman in black and white. Self-advertises as "Designers, Photographers, Engravers, Electrotypers, Printers" Very good to near-fine. Sharp color and crisp image. Minor toning with the occasional nick, imperfection, or offsetting.
