Mark's Crinoline Sketches - Crinoline Amusement

The crinoline, an oft mocked undergarment became a subject matter portrayed by S. Marks & Sons in the same manner as the vinegar valentine.

London: S. Marks & Sons, 1850s. Title caption reads Honi soit qui mal y pense (Shame on him who thinks ill of it”.) (Motto of the Order of the Garter). W. H. Harrisoon illustrator. A hand colored lithograph depicting a woman playing with a hoop and dog; the edge of her crinoline is exposed. A nearby man looks on. "Now Toby, your first performance, is to do! Jump through this Hoop, with Hoop de Dooden Doo!". Apparently the dog misinterpreted which hoop to jump through. Reverse is blank. Measures 8 1/4" x 7 1/2".
