Mark's Crinoline Sketches - Chimney Sweep Admires Leg Sighting Beneath Crinoline

The crinoline, an oft mocked undergarment became a subject matter portrayed by S. Marks & Sons in the same manner as the vinegar valentine.

London: S. Marks & Sons, 1850s. Title caption reads Honi soit qui mal y pense (Shame on him who thinks ill of it”.) (Motto of the Order of the Garter).

A hand colored lithograph depicting a woman tying her shoe causing her crinoline to rise and expose her other leg. A nearby chimney sweep quips "Oh Gemini there's a leg! how they show those things, 'of airy lightness, and don't the wells' like to see them that's all!". Reverse is blank. Measures 10" x 7". No OCLC or other online reference (August 2018).
