A collection of 18 personal New Year greetings etchings and drypoints by Troy Kinney 1916-1937
Troy Kinney ((Kansas City, 1871 - Falls Village, Connecticut, 1938) was most notable for his works portraying dance performers, fanciful subjects, and classically styled nudes. He worked with dance performers, including Ruth St. Denis, Anna Pavlova, and Sophie Pflanz among others. He co-authored with his wife the books "Social Dancing of Today" and "The Dance: Its Place in Art and Life", for which he traveled throughout the world to study various dance styles. It remains to this day one of the most comprehensive works on the subject. Kinney's original drypoints and etchings are now included in the collections of the Library of Congress, Washington, DC., the Chicago Art Institute, the Cleveland Museum and the New York Public Library.
1930. A grouping of etchings and drypoints of various dancers created by Troy, and used by Troy and his wife Margaret as New Year greetings. The earliest, 1916, depicts a pre-Revolutionary couple in a minuet style dance. Through the years the portrayals included ballerinas, mythical satyrs, classical and whimsical risqué ballerinas, Russian dancers and exotic dancers. For a number of years, following the move to Connecticut, a whimsical ballerina was portrayed doing various household chores from chopping wood to stoking a fire. Several signed in pencil. Some with brief New Year greetings. The only indication as to the recipients is a “Dear Anna & Nat” at the base of one card. Each measures approx 5 ½” x 4 ½”. Some mounted or with mats.Price: $950.00
