The Illuminated White Pine Alphabet
Boston, Massachusetts: New England Botanic Depot, 1890s. An illustrated ABC booklet for children advertising patent medicines sold by the New England Botanic Depot, including Dr. Swett's "Female Strengthening Cordial" that purports to treat "all derangements of the Female Reproductive Organs". Each letter has an accompanying eight-line rhyme and wood engraved illustration; references to the above-mentioned medicines are peppered throughout, along with ads and testimonials. The title refers to Dr. J.W. Poland's "White Pine Compound", which claimed to cure everything from sore throats to "spitting of blood" and kidney diseases. 16mo (6.5" by 4.75"), pp. 16 with illustrations in-text, sewn in original illustrated green wrappers. Fine.
